How Long to Study for CFA® Level I: Hours and Weeks

Plan for at least 300 hours of study for CFA® Level I: CFA Institute says successful candidates report spending over 300 hours on average per level. At 10 to 15 hours a week that is 20 to 30 weeks, so a working candidate should start about five to seven months before the exam window.

Updated 19 October 2026. Facts checked against the official sources listed at the end.

Where does the 300-hour figure come from?

It comes from CFA Institute itself. Its Level I page says successful candidates report spending over 300 hours on average preparing for each level, and its program page lists "300 hours per level". CFA Institute also warns, in its advice on choosing a prep provider, to be wary of anyone promising a pass in less than 300 hours.

Treat 300 hours as an average for people who passed, not a ceiling. Some need more, especially without a finance or accounting background.

How many weeks is 300 hours?

Study per weekWeeks for 300 hours
8 hoursabout 38 weeks
10 hours30 weeks
12 hours25 weeks
15 hours20 weeks
20 hours15 weeks
25 hours12 weeks

For most people with a full-time job, 10 to 15 hours a week is what lasts: about two hours on weekday evenings plus a longer block at the weekend. That puts the start date five to seven months before the exam.

Which factors change the number for you?

  • Your background. A finance, economics or accounting degree makes Financial Statement Analysis, Economics and Corporate Finance faster. Without one, expect more than 300 hours.
  • Your work. Daily work with financial statements or valuation helps; it does not replace study of the exam's methods and ethics rules.
  • Your English. The exam is only offered in English, and Level I questions are short but precise. Reading speed matters.
  • Your calculator fluency. Time value of money and cash flow keystrokes on the BA II Plus save minutes on exam day. Our BA II Plus guide covers them.

How should the hours be split?

A common shape for Level I is three phases:

  1. Learning (about 60-70% of the hours). Work through all ten topics once, with practice questions at the end of each.
  2. Practice and review (about 20-25%). Mixed questions across topics, revisiting your weak areas.
  3. Mock exams (the last two to four weeks). At least two full 180-question mocks under exam timing, each followed by a careful review.

Spread the topics by their exam weight; CFA Level I explained lists the weights, and a CFA Level I study plan turns this into a week-by-week outline.

When should you start for each exam window?

Work backwards from your window. CFA Institute's calendar (read on 19 October 2026) lists Level I in February (22 to 28 February 2027), May (11 to 17 May 2027), August (15 to 22 August 2027) and November (13 to 19 November 2027). At 15 hours a week, count back about 20 weeks from the first exam day, then add two weeks of slack for illness, work peaks and travel. CFA exam dates has the registration deadlines for each window.

The free study plan generator does this count for you: enter your exam date and it builds a weekly schedule.

How do you know you are ready?

Hours are an input, not a result. The better signal is your score on full, timed mocks taken late in your preparation, and whether your weakest topics are improving. If you want a first reading before you plan, the free 30-question mini mock gives you a quick baseline.
