What changes at Level III?
Levels I and II ask you to know and analyze. Level III asks you to integrate and apply: to take a client or an institution, weigh its goals and constraints, and recommend what to do with its money. Part of the exam is written. Instead of choosing A, B or C, you type an answer and justify it, and CFA charterholders grade those answers.
What is the exam format?
According to CFA Institute's Level III page:
- 11 item sets and 11 essay sets. Item sets are a case followed by multiple-choice questions; essay sets are a case followed by constructed-response questions.
- Two 132-minute sessions, each with either 6 item sets and 5 essay sets or 5 item sets and 6 essay sets. About 4.5 hours of exam time in total.
- No penalty for guessing on the multiple-choice items.
For the written answers, CFA Institute holds a grading event where hundreds of charterholders mark the essays. That is one reason Level III results take longer: CFA Institute gives 6 to 8 weeks after the exam and your Practical Skills Module, against 5 to 7 weeks at Levels I and II.
What are the three pathways?
Every Level III candidate studies the same common core (asset allocation, portfolio construction, performance measurement, derivatives and risk management, ethics), then one pathway. CFA Institute describes them as:
- Portfolio Management: the more advanced, public-markets portfolio management content of the earlier program, such as index and active equity strategies and fixed-income strategies.
- Private Markets: private markets investing mainly from the general partner's side: private equity, private debt, special situations, real estate and infrastructure.
- Private Wealth: serving high-net-worth clients, from wealth planning and investment planning to preserving and transferring wealth.
You choose the pathway at registration and cannot change it once registration is complete. The pathway is 30-35% of the exam and the common core 65-70%; every pathway leads to the same charter.
Which topics are tested?
The outline on CFA Institute's Level III page (read in October 2026):
| Topic | Weight |
|---|---|
| Asset Allocation | 15-20% |
| Portfolio Construction | 15-20% |
| Performance Measurement | 5-10% |
| Derivatives and Risk Management | 10-15% |
| Ethical and Professional Standards | 10-15% |
| Pathway (Portfolio Management, Private Markets or Private Wealth) | 30-35% |

Who can sit Level III, and when?
You must have passed Level II and still meet the enrollment requirements. Candidates who enrolled as undergraduates need either a completed bachelor's degree or 4,000 hours of professional work experience to sit Level III.
Level III has two windows a year. From CFA Institute's dates tool (read on 19 October 2026):
- February 2027: exam 18 to 21 February; registration closes 5 November 2026.
- August 2027: exam 11 to 14 August; early registration until 20 January 2027; registration closes 29 April 2027.
The Level III fee is higher than the other two levels: USD 1,240 early and USD 1,590 standard, before local tax.
How hard is Level III?
CFA Institute's historical results table shows Level III pass rates of 49% (February 2025), 50% (August 2025) 50% (February 2026) and 47% (August 2026). The ten-year figure for 2017 to 2026 is 50%.
The pass rate is higher than at the earlier levels, but the candidates have already passed two exams. The hard part is the writing: knowing the answer is not enough if the answer on the screen does not show the reasoning the question asked for. Candidates who pass Level III get pass or fail without a detailed score report; only those who fail receive one.
How should you prepare?
CFA Institute's guidance of over 300 hours per level still applies. At Level III, give the written questions real practice time: write full answers to past-style questions against the clock, then compare them with the model answer line by line. Read the command word in each question (calculate, justify, recommend) and answer exactly that.
